Richland WA
Real Estate - City History
In the mid 1800s, settlers were attracted to
Richland
for the rich soil, access to water and agreeable climate for farming and ranching. The community experienced slow, steady growth
compared to its sister cities of
Pasco
and
Kennewick
. It was incorporated in 1910 and remained a
relatively quiet town until 1942 when the United States Government took over the region
for the development of the atomic bomb. The
Manhattan Project produced the atomic bomb that destroyed
Hiroshima. Richland
boomed from a population of 1500 to over 11,000 with the residents recruited for
further nuclear energy research. Following
WW II, the government relinquished its hold on the city, which continued to grow as
Hanford
’s mission underwent some changes. Today,
the Department of Energy oversees the site’s many contractors. The mission is to safely dispose of spent nuclear
fuel and clean-up of contamination.
Richland
has been credited with having the highest number of scientists per capita in the
nation. A majority of the them are employed by
Battelle’s Pacific Northwest Pacific Laboratories (PNNL).
PNNL is responsible for multi-disciplined scientific research and development. PNNL also develops the technology for preventing and countering acts of terrorism
through applied research in information analysis, cyber security, and the
non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Medical
diagonistic equpment, environmentally friendly energy generation and alternate non-fossil
fuel energy sources are part of the continued mission.
